# How to multiply 5432 with 3124 in short time using a math trick?

As you can see this is a very long multiplication when done the usual way. Instead, it can be done more easily in a short time with a Vedic math trick.

I already wrote an article about multiplying two 3-digit numbers quickly using the Vedic math trick. The method is similar to that.

First, let us write the two numbers in the vertical order as below so that it makes a square with 2 rows and 4 columns.

**5 4 3 2 **

**3 1 2 4 **

**Step 1:** Select the first column with two vertical digits 5 and 3. We will multiply these two digits as below.

5 * 3 = 15 (**consider this as note 1 value**)

**Step 2:** Now select the first two columns containing 4 digits 5,4,3 and 1. We will cross-multiply and add together as below.

5 * 1 + 4 * 3 = 17 but we will write only 7 and carry the first digit that is 1.

So, 7 (**consider this as note 2 value and carry of 1 from above**)

**Step 3:** Now select the first three columns containing 6 digits 5,4,3, 3,1 and 2. We will cross-multiply 1st and 3rd columns and will also multiply the 2 digits in the 2nd column and add them all as below.

5 * 2 + 3 * 3 + 4 * 1 = 23 (but we will write only 3 and carry the first digit that is 2).

So, 3 (**consider this as note 3 value and carry of 2 from above**)

**Step 4:** Now select all the four columns containing 8 digits 5,4,3,2,3,1,2 and 4. We will cross-multiply 1st and 4th columns and also will cross multiply 2nd and 3rd columns and add them all as below.

5 * 4 + 3 * 2 + 4 * 2 + 1 * 3 = 37 (but we will write only 7 and carry the first digit that is 3).

So, 7 (**consider this as note 4 value and carry of 3 from above**).

**Step 5:** Now select the last three columns (not the first three columns) containing 6 digits 4,3,2,1,2 and 4. We will cross-multiply 1st and 3rd columns and also will multiply the 2 digits in the 2nd column and add them all as below.

4 * 4 + 2 * 1 + 3 * 2 = 24 (but we will write only 4 and carry the first digit that is 2).

So, 4 (**consider this as note 5 value and carry of 2 from above**)

**Step 6:** Now select the last two columns (not the first two columns) containing 4 digits 3,2,2 and 4. We will cross-multiply the two columns and add them all as below.

3 * 4 + 2 * 2 = 16 (but we will write only 6 and carry the first digit that is 1).

So, 6 (**consider this as note 6 value and carry of 1 from above**)

**Step 7:** Now we will select the last column containing 2 digits 2 and 4. We will multiply the two and add them as below.

2 * 4 = 8 (**consider this as note 7 value. There is no carry in it**).

To get the final answer we will write the note 1 to note 7 values in below order but before that we need to add the carry.

note 1 - note 2 - note 3 - note 4 - note 5 - note 6 - note 7

15 (note 1) +1 (carry of note 2) = 16

7 (note 2) + 2 (carry of note 3) = 9

3 (note 3) + 3 (carry of note 4) = 6

7 (note 4) + 2 (carry of note 5) = 9

4 (note 5) + 1 (carry of note 6) = 5

6 (note 6) + 0 (carry of note 7) = 6

8 (note 7) = 8

arranging notes values (in brackets) as below will give the final answer

note 1 (16) - note 2 (9)- note 3 (6) - note 4 (9) - note 5 (5) - note 6 (6) - note 7 (8)

**16969568** (**this is the answer of 5432 * 3124**).

Sometimes it may happen that the value of note 2 to note 7 (the end note) may be greater than or equal to 10. In that case, only 2nd digit in the value is taken as note value and the first digit is added as 'carry' to the previous note. **Plz note:** this method is applicable to multiple any two 4-digit numbers with each other.
