What is Vedic Astrology and how it is useful? Basics of Vedic Astrology
Home : Vedic Astrology: You are here
There are two types of birth charts
1) North Indian birth chart
2) South Indian birth chart.
We will consider here only the North Indian birth chart as it is easy to read and interpret.
See the chart on the left in this article or click here if you are on mobile and it is a default birth chart. In order to understand and predict from your own birth chart (after generating it by making use of an app or software), it is important to understand the default birth chart. There are 12 divisions in the default birth chart and each division represents a house in Vedic Astrology. The division where it is written no.1 > it is the first house and as you move anti-clockwise you can see all other houses. Each house represents something in Vedic Astrology and by default (default zodiac) each house is ruled by a particular sign and a particular number as mentioned below and each sign is also ruled by a certain planet.
Plz note: Planets are ruling signs as below but they are not ruling houses. Just I made things in one line for convenience. However, each sign or Rashi is denoted by a number as below.
1st house > Aries (fire sign) > 1 > ruled by Mars
2nd house > Taurus (earth sign) > 2 > ruled by Venus
3rd house > Gemini (air sign) > 3 > ruled by Mercury
4th house > Cancer (water sign) > 4 > ruled by Moon
5th house > Leo (fire sign) > 5 > ruled by Sun
6th house > Virgo (earth sign) > 6 > ruled by Mercury
7th house > Libra (air sign) > 7 > ruled by Venus
8th house > Scorpio (water sign) > 8 > ruled by Mars
9th house > Sagittarius (fire sign) > 9 > ruled by Jupiter
10th house > Capricorn (earth sign) > 10 > ruled by Saturn
11th house > Aquarius (air sign) > 11 > ruled by Saturn
12th house > Pisces (water sign) > 12 > ruled by Jupiter.
A birth chart is nothing but the snapshot of the time when you were born and it tells about what planets were ruling your different houses in your birth chart at the time you were born and that also helps in predicting but you can also know your rising sign or ascendant from your birth chart. In Vedic Astrology, we consider only 7 planets and also consider > Rahu and Ketu > which are the north and south nodes of Moon. These 7 planets are > Sun (su), Moon (mo), Mars (ma), Saturn (sa), Jupiter (ju), Mercury (me), and Venus (ve) and each of these planets own 1 or 2 signs in Vedic Astrology as mentioned above.
Also, each house represents something as below. The sign or Rashi on the first house is called the ascendant or the rising sign or Lagna (in Sanskrit). For example, if in your generated birth chart (using your date and time of birth) if you see No.4 in the first house it means you are a Cancer Ascendant (or Cancer Rising) and if you see no.5 on the first house it means you are a Leo Ascendant or Leo Rising and so on....For an Aries Ascendant person, the sign placements on his generated birth chart and the default birth chart are just the same.
Also, just like the rising sign, there is also a moon sign which is also called the Rashi in which you were born (Janam Rashi). Just check in your generated birth chart which sign your Moon is placed and that will be your moon sign or Janam Rashi. For example, if your Moon is located in the house where it is written no.6 then you were born in Virgo Moon sign or Virgo Rashi as no.6 represents the sign of Virgo.
Rising sign or Ascendant tells the purpose of your life and it also tells what kind of physical body you will be having. For example, if your Ascendant or rising sign is > Leo > then you were born in a fire sign and people born in fire sign have a lot of fire quality in them and fire quality is known best as it helps in sports and giving enthusiasm as fire gives you a lot of energy and willpower. It shows your body is fiery and fiery body is good for willpower and sports and fun and entertainment. This also shows you may be good at entertaining others.
On the other hand, your moon sign tells about your nature or what kind of soul you are such as whether you are desireful, depressive, enthusiastic, collective, individualistic, communicative, workaholic, power-hungry, lustful, emotional, creative, liberal, secretive, religious, social, lover of isolation, cruel, full of envy, etc. You will understand this better once you learn about the characteristics of different signs or Rashis as below.

Vedha power of a Graha
1) Direct motion - normal speed Front Vedha.
2) Direct motion - high speed Left Vedha.
3) Retrograde motion - Right Vedha.
All Grahas are transiting in Zodiac circle of 360°. Grahas are moving from first Pada, Nakshatra and Rasi to next Pada etc.
Rasi = 30° 0' / Nakshatra = 13° 20' / Pada = 3° 20'
When a Graha moves direct without stopping, in anti-clockwise direction, it is known as direct motion, i.e. Graha moving from Mesha to Vrisabha. Its Vedha is always front Vedha.
Ma, Bu, Gu, Sk, Sa have Vedha in one direction only depending on their speed.
Sy:It has uniform speed. So it has Vedha power of aspecting all the directions – right, left & front.
Ra & Ke
These two Grahas have uniform speed and being retrograde throughout the year. Hence these two Grahas alsohave Vedha power of aspecting all three directions - right, left & front.
Ma, Bu, Gu, Sk, Sa
All these Grahas have no uniform speed. So they will have the Vedha power as under: When retrograde in transit Right direction.
When in high speed in transit Left direction.
When in normal speed in transit Front direction.
